Dumb and Dumber To – The Sequel Now Has A Trailer

Dumb and Dumber is 20 years old. Just let that sink in for a moment.

That’s right; 20 years since that fur-covered van, those orange and pastel blue tuxedos, piss drinking cops and that retarded bowl haircut. Twenty. Years.

Well now we’re finally about to get some more Harry and Lloyd to chew on for another two decades.

The directorial debut of the Farrelly brothers (There’s Something About Mary) , Dumb & Dumber was the cult classic that cemented Jim Carrey (Batman Forever) and Jeff Daniels (Speed) as stars, and provided us with countless gags, references and quotes for years to come.

Yes, 1994 was a good year, especially for Carrey. His appearance in Dumb & Dumber capped off a trilogy of blockbuster comedy, with The Mask and Ace Ventura: Pet Detective all pillaging the box office like a willing whore one after the other.

In fact, once upon a time around this period even I spiked an old flat mate with some laxative. I was most saddened when the resulting effect was nothing like this:

Ah, halcyon days indeed.

Since then both actors have gone off in different directions, with Carrey pursuing more serious work, and Daniels preferring smaller indie roles. In recent memory, Carrey hasn’t done much since spitting his dummy out over the violence in for Kick Ass 2 (the clue is in the title, mate), and Daniels’ last great outing was time-traveler-hit-men boss Abe in 2012’s standout Looper.

A return to established, hilariously mental characters can only be a good thing – just as long as it’s any good.

Modern comedy films have certainly evolved with the times, even if their jokes about tits and shitting yourself haven’t. Dumb & Dumber certainly had an adult charm, but skirted the border of being entirely harmless as well.

By the looks of the new trailer, they’re focusing just as much on the adult laughs. However just as much attention is also seemingly being placed on the dynamism of the actors, and their devotion to making physical twats of themselves onscreen. I’m sure it will have the kids giggling, at any rate.

However they are looking a bit shop-soiled now, and the whole storyline of Carrey’s Lloyd Christmas falling for Harry’s mysterious daughter is a bit forced. He’s literally old enough to be her grandfather now.

This also follows a lackluster prequel from 2003, and a length period of both actors “uming” and “ahing” over their involvement with the project. Still it’s now made, and we’re all expecting fire works.

Gone is Carrey’s ex-wife Lauren Holly (Dragon: Bruce Lee Story), and in is badass femme Kathleen Turner (Romancing the Stone). They’re also joined by box office gold magnet, Jennifer Lawrence (Hunger Games). No longer painted blue, J-Law will appear as the young (and appropriately named) Fraida Felcher – Harry’s old girlfriend.

As with any old film getting a sudden and perhaps irrelevant sequel, my hopes aren’t set too high for this . We know that the Farrelly brothers can pull it out of the bag, and Daniels and Carrey both have the talent to make us cough up a lung.

Here’s hoping.
